A Bigger Beauty and the Beast

Industry sources say that in about a week Disney is will announce plans to release an Imax version of the its animated hit Beauty and the Beast in late 2001 or early 2002. The plan is partially inspired by Disney's success with Fantasia 2000, the revamped and large-format reissue of the 1940 Fantasia. Disney's first venture into Imax grossed more than $50 million, which is extremely successful for an Imax release.  Imax CEO Brad Wechsler had told financial analyst in November that a "repurposed Hollywood film" would hit Imax screens in late 2001 or early 2002. A Disney spokeperson did respond to comment requests on Monday.
