Aaliyah Enters The Matrix

R&B singer Aaliyah has joined the cast of the sequels to The Matrix, the first of which begins production in March in Australia with the third film to begin filming immediately after writer/directors Larry and Andy Wachowski finish shooting the second. The plots for both films are being closely guarded but it is known that her character is named Zee and will be featured more prominently in the third film than the second. It is assumed, though not confirmed, that Aaliyah is playing the role previously offered to Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Aaliyah made her acting debut in Romeo Must Die opposite Li. That film, like The Matrix, was produced by Joel Silver for Village Roadshow and Warner Bros.. Original stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving will return, and Jada Pinkett Smith will play Niobi, a love interest for Fishburne's Morpheus.
