Cameron's Coffin

James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment has optioned The Coffin, a comic book series by Phil Hester and Mike Huddleston, in a six-figures deal for 20th-Century Fox. Lightstorm is already in talks with Guillermo del Toro to direct after he finishes Blade 2, which is currently casting. The Coffin is about a scientist who creates a polymer suit that contains the soul after the body dies. When near death, the scientist dons the suit, becoming a sort of Frankenstein monster, and seeks a reconciliation with his estranged daughter.

The film will be produced by Cameron, Rae Sanchini and John Landau. Big Blast Entertainment, a spinoff of Coffin publisher Oni Press and comics merchandiser Graphitti Designs. Oni publisher Joe Nozemack specifically formed Big Blast with Chip Mosher and Bob Chapman to adapt comics for film and TV. Oni already has a presence in Hollywood. Its title Whiteout by Greg Rucka has been optioned by Wolfgang Peterson, and Oni publishes Kevin Smith’s Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob comic books.
