Essex Gets Rice's Mummy

James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, has hired novelist  Karen Essex to adapt Anne Rice's novel The Mummy or Ramses the Damned. Essex has generated favorable buzz for her upcoming two-volume novel Kleopatra, which is a feminist take on the life of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. The books will be released by Warner Bros. Books in August and August 2002. The thorough research done by Essex and her dynamic story telling appealed to Lightstorm Development Vice President Stacy Maes. Rice's novel focuses on Egyptian pharaoh Ramses the Great, who is re-awoken by an archeologist after 2,000 years. The intruder must then keep Ramses and his secret safe. Production is currently planned for 2002.
