New Cover for Batman #612 Second Printing

Due to the quick sellout of Batman #612, DC Comics has gone back to press for that issue but the new version of the issue which pits the Dark Knight Detective against a Poison Ivy-controlled Superman will now feature an alternate printing. The new version will showcase artist Jim Lee's original pencils for the cover without inking or coloring. The issue was written by Jeph Loeb.
Second printings of sold-out titles are becoming increasingly rare. Marvel did away with second printings some time ago in an effort to boost initial orders. Once a Marvel order ships, retailers cannot get extra copies no matter how much demand indicates. Retailers were, of course, not happy about this policy since it meant either lost revenue from not meeting customer demands for a suddenly hot issue or having to order excessive quantities of every issues in case interest is unusually high. Despite complaints from retailers and little financial advantage the company has kept the policy. DC recently announced plans to experiment with such a policy on a limited basis but obviously is still willing to go back to press sometimes.
"Jim and I couldn't be happier that DC is once again fulfilling the needs of the marketplace," said Loeb. "Batman is certainly exceeding everyone's expectations, since we keep selling out! We had long discussions about doing a second printing, and DC saw that the fans and retailers liked the idea of a new cover image for the second printing. So, once again, we looked into our bag of tricks, and Jim produced his original pencils for the cover. It's gorgeous and really shows how much work Jim's putting into this story. Now, everyone who wants a copy of #612 can get one and enjoy the battle royale between Batman and Superman. And... we're only 5 issues in on a 12-part story, so you'd better believe there's more to come!"
"Although the timeframe on the second printing is tight, we're glad to distinguish it from the first printing," said Bob Wayne, DC's vice-president of sales and marketing. "It was Jeph's suggestion that we go with pencil art, giving readers a rare glimpse at Jim's extraordinary vision."
